Sorry, I was going to get up early and continue the War on Women with a snide post or two but lumberwife forgot her cell phone and I had to bring it to her. Maybe I'll get the chance to oppress someone later tonight. Right now I don't even have time to be racist.

Federal Conscience Laws

Darn, if only Joe Wilson had waited a few seconds before yelling "Liar!"

There it is: Obama said that federal conscience laws would remain in place. Then Obama's HHS mandate effectively negated the conscience laws. Catholics and other religious objected, so Obama announced an "accommodation" that changed not one word of the mandate, and in effect changed nothing. so....... "Liar!"

Remember the promise that if you like the insurance you have now, you can keep it? That's a lie too. It's only a matter of time before it becomes obvious.

Another trip down memory lane, Arlen Specter has a book out in which he complains about the way Obama rewarded him for his sell out:

Former Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) writes in a new book that President Obama ditched him in the 2010 election after he helped Obama win the biggest legislative victory of his term by passing healthcare reform.

Specter also claims that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) did not uphold his promise to grant him seniority accrued over 28 years of service in the Senate as a Republican…

Specter writes that Obama turned down a request to campaign with him in the final days of the primary, because the president’s advisers feared he would look weak if he intervened and Specter lost…

Twenty-eight years in the Senate; you'd think Specter would have enough friends to raise hell about him being mistreated by the Majority Leader. Oh, that's right, he sold out his friends for promises of reward from the other side. That is exactly why you don't make pacts with the devil.

It's not for nothing that a Penguin was chosen as a Batman villain. Watch them here live. Watch their meritocracy, in which the biggest and fastest penguins are first to get the tasty fish and those that are slower are forced to eat exactly the same fish a little bit later.

Watch the fights as gangs of lightly armed penguins drive innocent rivals off of the area the penguins call, "hey, I was standing there first."


Here,I was lucky enough to catch a brave zoo worker trying to retrieve a garden hose that the little thugs had stolen. This is the last shot of his legs as he tries to escape with the hose. You can only imagine the fate he met off screen.

I was idly thinking about how much more dangerous these guys would be if they had stingers. Then it occurred to me; I don't ever remember reading that they don't have stingers. You think I jest, but you didn't see that zoo worker disappear.

I suppose that in light of this afternoon's carnage, I should label the penguin cam as Not Safe For Work. Who knew? I swear I didn't know that they fed these fellows by herding in a live cow. Still they made quick work of the cow and everything has been cleaned up in their "killing zone". So it's safe to view the cam again, though I'd keep a finger on the mouse button if you should see a cow being led in.

RIP Peter Bergman

Peter Bergman, a founding member of the surrealist comedy troupe Firesign Theater, whose albums became cult favorites among college students in the late 1960s and ’70s for a brand of sly, multilayered satire so dense it seemed riddled with non sequiturs until the second, third or 30th listening, died on Friday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 72.

Well that's a darned shame. I remember the Firesign Theater albums fondly. Half the fun was in trying to follow the storyline. My favorite skit from the period was about prairie dog fishing - "ya let um run with it for a few dozen yards then give a little tug. Blap! Turns um inside-out. Makes a heck of a mukluk." I couldn't find it on the interwebs but I remember it as the Firesign boys. (could be wrong, but that was their type of comedy and I've used the mukluk threat on every dog I've ever had)

Mortgage? No Problem - But Oh Those Medical Bills!

The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics was told to come up with Obamacare propaganda and they did. They even had highlights to punch-up the narrative:

• Almost 24 percent of children under 18 years were in families having difficulty paying medical bills compared with 21 percent of 18- to 64-year olds, 10 percent of people 65 to 74, and 7 percent of those aged 75 and over.
• Poor or near-poor people under 65 were more likely to live in families having problems paying medical bills or to have medical bills they couldn't pay at all.
• More than one in five poor or near-poor people under 65 lived in families that had medical bills they couldn't pay.
• Those 65 and over who were poor or near poor were more than three times as likely as people who were not poor to live in families that struggled to pay medical bills in the past year.

What jumps out at me is the fact that they're using exact numbers with fuzzy concepts. Just what does "difficulty paying medical bills" mean? I'd hazard a guess that those people are "having difficulty" with all their bills. Can you imagine, "Oh the cable bill, mortgage, gasoline, tuition, taxes, and automobile insurance - they're no problem. We sure have difficulty with those medical bills though." That's silly. You have "difficulty" with the totality of your bills, not with different parts of them. Whatever "difficulty" is.

Another indication that this report was ordered to prop up Obamacare: the children. Children under 18 who live in difficulty-families aren't alone in those families; you have to assume there are one or two adults in the family as well. Plus, the under 18 portion of the family isn't responsible for the bills. The under-18 statistic was chosen because there must be a slightly higher percentage of them than adults in these families. They count the children (the children!) because it jacks up the percentage to 23% and change, which they then round up to "nearly 24%."

The other three highlights concern the "poor or near poor." Again, what is "poor or near poor"? The term is as exact as "difficulty paying medical bills." Anyway, is it any surprise that they have trouble paying their bills? That's almost the definition of poor: the available money is less than the bills.

Get ready. The government is doing what the president tells them to do. They'll fiddle statistics, buy electric cars, and put the best face possible on all his follies.

The good news? They're the government and they often do a poor job. (like this)

BTW- Don't take it personally if you work for the government; I know many excellent people in the government. It's not their fault that the government turns their pearls into swine flu vaccine.
