State wildlife officials in Florida are trying to determine the species of the blue eyeball, which was discovered by Gino Covacci on Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale.
'It was very, very fresh,' he told the Sun Sentinel. 'It was still bleeding when I put it in the plastic bag.'
The eyeball has been put on ice to preserve it and will be analysed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St Petersburg.
Agency spokeswoman Carli Segelson says the eyeball likely came from a marine animal, since it was found on a beach.
'This is definitely an unusual situation, where an eye would be found independent of any other body part,' she added.
So far, possibilities include a giant squid, a whale or some type of large fish.
