Huge Indian Coins Found

Apparently scientists at Delhi University have discovered Indian 5 rupee coins the size of dinner plates. "We had no idea coins could get this big," said one scientist, who said I didn't have to use his name.

You've seen the story, I bet:

The visit by "The Elders," which is headed by Carter and Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu, is largely a symbolic move by a host of respected figures to push all sides to make peace.

Here's the Greygle folks offering a greyed out google in order to save pixels worth of energy, while the 800 pound gorilla of energy-saving uses three 30 inch monitors and keeps a plasma TV running behind him just for the background noise. Think he might be booking a commercial airline flight on any of those monitors? Think again.

Rush to Judgment

Michelle Malkin noticed Steny Hoyer hedging his bets on the Rush kerfuffle. Truth is, I never credited Steny with this much savvy. Just look at it -- the only people you're going to fool are those incapable of reading three paragraphs into a news story, and who can't work Youtube. I mean really, these people are looking a little foolish, refusing to admit that Limbaugh was referring to actual phony soldiers.

Let’s leave aside the indisputable track record of his program, where Rush daily demonstrates he is as zealous and consistent a proponent of our armed forces as there is. Let’s put aside radio promotions like his “Adopt a Soldier” initiative that encourage public support for our troops while making his features more accessible to the countless troops who want them. Let’s even ignore for the moment his visits overseas to those in combat and stateside to those wounded in combat.

We are talking about someone who raises and contributes out of his own pocket millions of dollars to provide scholarships for the children of Marines and other personnel killed in action.

There has never been an ideological test for that support. The Marines and their families needn’t agree with Rush’s politics to qualify. Instead, it is and it has always been an expression of heartfelt gratitude for service.

What Rush Limbaugh has ceaselessly honored is military service — love of country, not ideological purity.

Agree or disagree with his politics, it is shameful to suggest otherwise.

WaPo Poll, Say that three times real fast

WAPopoll-WAPopoll-WAPopoll-WAPopoll It's the sound my wife's car was making the other week as she drove it up to the house with a flat tire. I explained about driving on a flat... again. But what the heck, the rim was ok, and at least the flat tire didn't smell of fish.

The other WaPo poll does smell somewhat of fish. It's the America Wants Out of Iraq poll from the Washington Post/ABC. What's fishy, the main thing anyway, is the number of Republicans vs the number of Democrats in the polling sample. A 2002 Gallup poll shows the nation pretty much evenly divided between R's, D's, and I's. 32% say Democrat, 31% Republican, and the rest independent, unsure, unresponsive, or asleep. And that is pretty much in line with what I've always heard, that we're divided among Republicans and, you know, the other guys.

So why are there usually more Democrats in the WaPo poll:

Notice how many R's vs D's? Seems the pollsters just couldn't get Republicans to answer the phone. But a partial clue is at the top of the results:

This Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted by telephone September 27-30, 2007, among a random national sample of 1,114 adults, including additional interviews with randomly-selected African Americans, for a total of 212 black respondents.

What struck me was, why the extra interviews specifically of African Americans? I can see it if they found they had an under-sampling of blacks; they could include extra interviews to bring the overall sample up to the percentages found in the general population. And that would make sense. But their extra interviews bring the percentage of blacks up to 19%. Why a higher percentage of blacks than the general population? Could it be because most African Americans are Democrats?

Polls are of pretty limited value in the first place, but when you stack the deck, they become pretty much useless.

So some judge has decided that Federline's people would do a better job raising children than Spear's people. Call me old fashioned but I still believe that where children are involved, it's best to hire the very best people you can find.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Pop star Britney Spears on Monday lost custody of her two sons after a wrenching and highly publicized court battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Federline "is to retain physical custody of the minor children on Wednesday October 3, 2007 at 12:00 pm until further order of the court," Judge Scott Gordon wrote in his court order.

Celebrity websites TMZ and X17 said Spears took her sons to the drive-through window of a fast food restaurant before handing them over to Federline's bodyguards shortly after noon on Monday.

So, left the kids with the bodyguards? It'd be funny if children weren't involved. On the up side, kids are hugely resilient. Missing the one and only chance you'll have to raise them, in order to spend more time with your drugs and alcohol, baffles me though.
