A Fine Day Today

Just washed two vans and did a brake job in my shirtsleeves. I guess we need the freeze to make us appreciate it when everything switches back to perfect again. It's the truth: doing the brake job in the driveway, I was afraid to turn around for fear there would be Disney bunnies, butterflies, and fawns cavorting around on the grass behind me. It was just that sweet of a day.

I'll welcome the snow again, because I know that cold is the only thing that can stop the big lumbering carbon spewers who lecture us about using too much of the stuff. But I also appreciate that God in His wisdom has given us weather, climate, and Elisha Cuthbert. You go God!

A Fortnight?

This drives me crazy:

President Obama has had, by general consent, a torrid First Fortnight. To put it another way, it has taken precisely two weeks for the illusion that brought him to power to be exposed for the nonsense that it so obviously was.

I agree with you about the Obamination, but make up your mind! Was it two weeks, or was it a fortnight?

OK, so today it's 7.6%, and spending is down. And sure, 7.6% is worse than 5.5%, but there was sweetness and light at 5.5% -- how can 7.6% be the worst possible disaster? Or as Nancy Pelosi puts it, "We will soon be pulling our own teeth to sell the fillings for pennies just to buy a scrap of bread that we'll then have to gum, because we don't have any teeth left, but it won't matter because there won't be any bread to buy, because 500 million farmers are starving to death every day."

And would it even be 7.6% if they hadn't been preaching doom and gloom for the last six months? Remember FDR? At is inauguration on March 4, 1933 , under much worse economic circumstances, he uttered his famous words: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Our "new FDR" is giving speeches about how we aren't fearful enough. And about how this stimulus package is too important to debate first.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

Sad numbers:

It takes even less familiarity with statistics to be stunned by the public policy implications in a simple question about abortion figures. Asked in an experiment to guess how many abortions occur in the US for every million live births, students gave a wide range of answers. At the middle of the range was an estimate of 5,000. That figure is so far from the correct answer - 335,000 - that, in the words of the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, it is "not even wrong." Blastland and Dilnot report that being asked to guess before learning the correct answer leads to a greater sense of surprise, and students in the experiment became much more supportive of abortion restrictions. "Accurate data does matter to people," the authors rule.

Aghast?

I'll bet it happens more often than we hear about; a baby is born alive during an abortion attempt, then put in a plastic bag and thrown away. I won't quote beyond this:

The case has riled the anti-abortion community, which contends the clinic's actions constitute murder.

"The baby was just treated as a piece of garbage," said Tom Brejcha, president of The Thomas More Society, a law firm that is also representing Williams. "People all over the country are just aghast."

In Illinois Barack Obama fought to keep it legal to just leave the baby exposed until it died. For the life of me I can't see the difference.
