Man Am I Getting Phone Calls

Anyone else getting way more calls this election year than they ever have in the past? Most of them have been recordings from the candidates, several were from actual campaign workers, and a few have been from disguised campaign workers. "We just were wondering how you were going to vote..." Sure you were lady. So I say I'm voting R and you kill my dog. No thanks, I've had it with you nonviolent types.

Anyway, this last one was Argumentative-Linda from Call For Change. I got an immediate protect-your-genitals vibe from the way she was asking questions so I claimed to be voting solely on the candidates' astrological signs.

Well, would I be voting for Cardin?

Linda, are you aware of that man's sign?

No she says.

So I tell her that I can't discuss politics with anyone so ignorant of the important factors in this election. She hung up.


Turns out Call For Change is a Move-On.org effort. There's a surprise. I'll be voting for the man who's showing up in Linda's nightmares. And the Zodiac has nothing to do with it.

Saddam

I so seldom follow the sensational headlines from Drudge anymore. "CIVIL WAR MAY FOLLOW SADDAM DEATH VERDICT..."
is one I skipped. Who wants to read an account from someone who is wishing for civil war?

I've found that Iraq the Model is a good barometer of the mood in Iraq. So what is Mohammed saying?

"The overwhelming majority of Iraqis are looking forward to seeing justice be served tomorrow which will give the fascist dictator, who brutalized and abused millions of people and their homeland for decades, give him what he deserves.
We have been dreaming for such a day to come and it will be a true turning point, not only for Iraq but for the middle east, for it will be the first time a ruler gets paid back for what he'd done by a court of law."

Let's hope those who will try to exploit the situation to cause division have their plans frustrated. Whatever the verdict, this should be a step forward for Iraq.

Student be Stupid

I know it's bucking the trend but I'm going to accept the apology of the U of P prez Amy Gutmann. At least she's saying that she disapproved of the costume:

"The costume is clearly offensive and I was offended by it. As soon as I realized what his costume was, I refused to take any more pictures with him, as he requested."

OK then. I'm inclined to take her word for it. And I can even see how the one picture could have been taken before she had a chance to react. I'm always having people come up to me at parties and wanting to have their picture taken with the lumberjack; sometimes they sneak up on you. Course, Babe, the blue ox, gets it even more than me.

Dumb Kid

Not even dumb really, just, well, being a kid. This is hardly the first un-thought-through Halloween costume a college kid has put together. I might question Amy Gutmann's decision to pose with him. She's supposed to be a sober adult; and the president of the University of Pennsylvania. She should know that suicide bombers target the innocent. Would she have posed with him if he'd dressed up as one of the Columbine killers? Of course not. How bout if there was an Andrea Yates costume? Would that be OK?

No, but it's perfectly all right to pose with someone dressed as an indiscriminate killer of children. Why did she do it? I doubt she realized what she was doing. The left has become so lazy these days, I doubt any of them have thought through what it means to support Palestinian suicide bombers. Why put forth the effort? You already picked your side. AP won't bother you with images of carnage in Israel. The New York Times won't profile the victims of Jihad. You just take your cues from your environment. If the kefiya is the style, you go with it.

I don't expect it to enter a kid's head as he kneels at the feet of the mock "terrorist", "what if I did one day have to pray 5 times a day under the barrel of a gun? What if they did kill my neighbor for being gay? What if they raped my sister for showing her face?" A kid at a party isn't going to think it through. The grown-ups in attendance should have.

So plastering the Halp Us image all over the internet finally forced a mainstream media outlet (the AP) into carrying it. Good. That means Kerry will join Nancy Pelosi in the Shut-Up-Until-After-Nov.7 Bunker. Remember John, what happens in the bunker, stays in the bunker.

More NYT

Captain Quarters has posted many of the captured IIS documents along with translations. Including this, from a memo concerned that the US would link Iraq and terrorists shortly after 9-11:

1. Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban Group in Afghanistan were in touch with the Iraqis and that group of the Talibans and Osama Bin Laden had visited Iraq.
2. The United States of America has evidence that the Iraqi government and Osama Bin Laden's group expressed cooperation among themselves in bombing targets in American.
3. In case Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban were proven to have been involved in carrying out these terrorist operations, it could be possible that the United Stated will attack both Iraq and Afghanistan.
4. The Afghani consul heard about the connection between the Iraqis and the Osama Bin Laden group during his stay in Iran.
5. Upon what has been presented we suggest writing to the Intention Committee with the above information.

And what I've got to wonder is why this memo wasn't considered news by the New York Times.

Now the Times is concerned with nuclear documents that were released through the same IIS document dump? Why is this news and the Saddam-terrorist connection isn't? And, btw, I'll admit that if we made sensitive nuclear documents available, it was a mistake. I understand we've removed access to them now.

I don't doubt that the Times is a little angry. They have prided themselves on always being first to publish information that is damaging to this country. They must be embarrassed that someone beat them to it. Now let's see if they consider any of the other IIS documents newsworthy.
