Air America

If I had a shortwave radio, I'd try to find Air America. No, really, if for no other reason that it would give me something to be (patchouli) incensed about.

But now the beacon of the tin foil hat set, Randi Rhodes, has been suspended, and I may never get to hear her. Remember Randi? (She's the one who was mugged by a pack of right-wing thugs who resembled eleven Guinness and six shots of Raspberry Stoli)

The NYT has the story of her suspension:

Ms. Rhodes used vulgar language that likened Mrs. Clinton to a prostitute at an event sponsored by KKGN, the Air America affiliate in the San Francisco area, on March 22. A video of Ms. Rhodes’ remarks was published to the video-sharing Web site YouTube on Tuesday, prompting condemnations by some bloggers.

Heh, heh, heh. You know they wouldn't have suspended her if she was making the same remarks about Condi Rice. It's only crude if you're talking about another liberal.

Operation chaos seems to be working.

Ted Turner Sees Cannibals

Ted Turner comforts me. Well, not personally, but it's good to know that I can turn into a crazy old coot and still be accepted so long as I make a roomful of cash first.

Newsbusters has video of his latest "cannibal" interview with Charlie Rose. What a guy. He arrives in his private jet and complains that if we don't stop burning carbon we'll all be eating each other like New Orleans in the wake of Katrina.

I figure I'll have at least enough cash to get away with a few you-kids-keep-off-my-grass tirades, standing in the driveway, shaking my cane, in my pajamas.

(sorry for the light blogging the last few days, I've had lots of work to do - which is good)

Transatlantic Plot

Next time you hear some indignant passenger raising hell at the security checkpoint because they have to throw away their energy drink, think on this:

A gang of British Muslims planned to blow up seven planes within hours in the biggest terrorist atrocity since 9/11, a court heard yesterday.

Two thousand passengers would have died in the plot by eight fanatics working "in the name of Islam", the jury was told.

Well, there but for the grace of God, huh?

More Lawnmowers

I promise this won't become just another lawnmowers-in-strange-places blog.

Probably.

Anyone else notice the unfortunate placement of the Oprah image on Drudge? I have to wonder if he does this intentionally sometimes.

That's not a scold.

Last April Fools Post

Five minutes left for April Fools posts. He shoots - he scores.

Cruel Joke

No April fools jokes from me. It was all I could do to post anything at all today. Don't know if it's Blogger or me this time. So here's a nature shot:

And here's a rally in Tehran, being broken up early by Ahmadinejad's latest crowd control device, "Mahmoud's Lawn Boy".

No, really.

All You Need to Know

I don't often get to listen to vast right wing conspiracy radio, but I heard a Barack Obama sound bite today that I think says it all:

Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.
-Barack Obama

What a guy. What a way with words. "Punished with a baby"
Hope he makes it his campaign slogan.

Who Needs Food When You Can Drive?

When Time magazine admits there's a problem with a liberal scheme, you know it's in trouble. Sure it's beneficial for diesel mechanics that we have hippies driving around the US in biofuel busses. And I've got nothing against well to do liberals indulging their inner-smug, but really, food is for eating.

Meanwhile, by diverting grain and oilseed crops from dinner plates to fuel tanks, biofuels are jacking up world food prices and endangering the hungry. The grain it takes to fill an SUV tank with ethanol could feed a person for a year. Harvests are being plucked to fuel our cars instead of ourselves. The U.N.'s World Food Program says it needs $500 million in additional funding and supplies, calling the rising costs for food nothing less than a global emergency. Soaring corn prices have sparked tortilla riots in Mexico City, and skyrocketing flour prices have destabilized Pakistan, which wasn't exactly tranquil when flour was affordable.

Biofuels do slightly reduce dependence on imported oil, and the ethanol boom has created rural jobs while enriching some farmers and agribusinesses. But the basic problem with most biofuels is amazingly simple, given that researchers have ignored it until now: using land to grow fuel leads to the destruction of forests, wetlands and grasslands that store enormous amounts of carbon.

Backed by billions in investment capital, this alarming phenomenon is replicating itself around the world. Indonesia has bulldozed and burned so much wilderness to grow palm oil trees for biodiesel that its ranking among the world's top carbon emitters has surged from 21st to third according to a report by Wetlands International....

And btw, it's not just corn that goes up in price when crops are diverted to biofuels. When grains go up in price, farm animals, which feed on that grain, go up in price too. Last year I noticed a frozen goose in my local supermarket that sat in the freezer from before Thanksgiving until after Christmas. I figured it would go on sale but if it did I missed it. Why did it sit so long? It was marked at $47. For a goose. What? Maybe an 8 pound goose. Thanks a lot hippies.
