“If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”
Sure, it smells of Big Brother when the federal government asks its citizens to search for perpetrators in the "fishy" information scandal. It reminds me of stories from the former Soviet Union of children turning in their parents, neighbors turning on each other, nobody able to speak their mind freely for fear of the Gulag.
So the question comes up: What is the government going to do with this information? Well, I'm fairly certain we aren't going to have labor camps in North Dakota anytime soon. Could the government shut the lying liars up? Not without violating the First Amendment, they couldn't:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
So why? Why the search for the source of the "fishiness"? Well maybe the search isn't meant to find anything. In fact I think the White House knows that there isn't any one source for opposition to Obamacare. Maybe the search is just a ruse to promote the idea that there is a single source for this opposition. "Don't listen to those arguments. They're just lies; put forth by agitators bought and paid for by the big (bad) medical industry.
(by the way, if Big Med is paying for this stuff, could someone please get me an address or contact number? I somehow didn't make it on to the payroll)
Well on the off chance that the White House really is serious in tracking down these miscreants, I've done a little sleuthing on my own. I think I can identify the source for at least one of the internet rumors. I don't have a name yet but it appears that the person in this screen grab is responsible for the rumor that Obama is really interested in a single-payer system:
We're working on enhancing the photo and getting a name.
