Climategate 3.0

 You remember Climategate: the release of e-mails between the heavy-hitters in the Global Warming industry. They were released in two batches in 2009 and 2011. Now there's been a third, much larger, release of encrypted files that is being scrubbed of personal information before being disseminated online.

We also now have a message from the whistle-blower, Mr FOIA,  who is behind the release:

Why did [Mr. FOIA] do it? His answer was both angry and anguished: “Climate science has already directed where humanity puts its capability, innovation, mental and material ‘might’ …. The price of ‘climate protection’ with its cumulative and collateral effects is bound to destroy and debilitate in great numbers, for decades and generations,” he wrote. “We can’t pour trillions in this massive hole-digging-and-filling-up endeavor and pretend it’s not [taking] away from something and someone else.”

That’s the most important statement so far in the decades-old climate debate: You’re forcing us backward into poverty and ignorance – for nothing, except to further your careers, funding and power.

Less than a week later, London’s Mail on Sunday newspaper ran an outraged feature based on the British Meteorological Office’s recent admission that global surface temperatures haven’t risen in more than 15 years. Citing a chart of predicted and actual temperatures, the Mail noted: “Official predictions of global climate warming have been catastrophically flawed. The graph on this page blows apart the ‘scientific basis’ for Britain reshaping its entire economy and spending billions in taxes and subsidies in order to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. The chart shows in incontrovertible detail how the speed of global warming has been massively overestimated. Yet those forecasts have had a ruinous impact on the bills we pay, from heating to car fuel to huge sums paid by councils to reduce carbon emissions. The eco-debate was, in effect, hijacked by false data.”

I hope the retreat from this AGW insanity continues with this third batch of e-mails. Personally, I don't need much more proof thanwhat we've already seen:

Phil Jones wrote, “I’ve been told that IPCC is above national FOI Acts. One way to cover yourself and all those working on the IPCC 5th  Assessment Report would be to delete all e-mails at the end of the process. Any work we have done in the past is done on the back of the research grants we get – and has to be well hidden. I’ve discussed this with the main funder [the U.S. Department of Energy] in the past and they are happy about not releasing the original station data.”

The U.S. government was colluding with the hiders, who received tens of millions of dollars over the years.

Jones wrote to Mann, “Mike, can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith Briffa re AR4 [the IPCC 4th Assessment Report]? Keith will do likewise. … We will be getting Caspar Ammann to do likewise.”

Why do "scientists" need to hide information? Or, more importantly, why should we pay more for beef, gasoline, air travel, and manufactured products because these "scientists" are hiding information?

Despite its being an apparently trivial topic, some people hold strong opinions on the matter. Advice columnist Ann Landers said that the subject was the most controversial issue in her column's history. Defenders of either position cite advantages ranging from aesthetics, hospitality, and cleanliness to paper conservation, the ease of detaching individual squares, and compatibility with a recreational vehicle or a cat. Celebrities and experts are found on both sides. Some writers have proposed connections to age, sex, or political philosophy; and survey evidence has shown a correlation with socioeconomic status.


Solutions range from compromise, to using separate dispensers or separate bathrooms entirely, or simply ignoring the issue altogether. One man advocates a plan under which his country will standardize on a single forced orientation, and at least one inventor hopes to popularize a new kind of toilet roll holder which swivels from one orientation to the other.

New Math

Mail online has:

Animal rights charity PETA killed almost 90 per cent of dogs and cats placed in the care of the shelter at its Virginia headquarters last year, it has been revealed today.

The charity, well-known for attention grabbing publicity campaigns such as the 'I'd rather go naked' anti-fur campaign, euthanized 1,647 cats and dogs last year and only placed 19 in new homes according to the data submitted to the Virginia Department for Agriculture and Consumer Services.

OK, which is bad. But this is doubly bad -- bad activists, and bad math. See what happens when you give in to the metric system? You think that 19 is 10% of 1,647.  But 19 is 1.1 % of 1,647. So Peta killed 98.9% of the animals it took in.

Which isn't that big of a surprise. Peta activists are about making themselves feel better, not dumb animals. I mean look at LOL catz. Look at my Cute posts. Who doesn't love animals? We all do. None of us want to see them suffer.

But who joins Peta? People who have a need to protest. Something is wrong in their lives and they don't quite know what it is, but they can scratch that itch by telling everyone else that they're bastards. Their anger finds a target and they feel a bit better.

They could do more good by volunteering at a real animal shelter. And maybe some of them do. But the point of Peta is the rage. Plus, probably some of the people in that building are making a pretty penny stoking the belly fires of the rank and file.

So solutions:  For the problem of Peta - adopt a pet, pet that pet, repeat.

For the problem of math - stay away from the metric system. Stay in school.

As for protesting, save it. You'll need that righteous indignation if Fig Newtons ever go metric.

Sequestration Hits the NEA

In order to cut costs the National Endowment for the Arts has created the One Art project. An NEA spokesperson explained, "The sequestration cuts have forced us to abandon all NEA grants that don't involve one particular image of President Obama. We had to eliminate everything else."

"We had to pick one project that we could still afford and that was the one we picked. Don't blame us. Blame the Republicans."

Medical assistant Adrienne Moton admitted Tuesday that she had cut the necks of at least 10 babies after they were delivered, as Gosnell had instructed her. Gosnell and another employee regularly “snipped” the spines “to ensure fetal demise,” she said.

Moton sobbed as she recalled taking a cellphone photograph of one baby because he was bigger than any she had seen aborted before. She measured the fetus at nearly 30 weeks, and thought he could have survived, given his size and pinkish color. Gosnell later joked that the baby was so big he could have walked to the bus stop, she said.

Notwithstanding Dr. Gosnell’s jest, and the fact that newborns delivered alive are generally regarded as “babies,” the New York Times’ only story on the case is punctilious enough to refer to Gosnell’s victims as “viable fetuses,” and its early paragraphs emphasize the defense’s wearily predictable line that this is a “racist prosecution.”

I can verify that the US government does this a lot. More popular is: filling diesel machines with gasoline, though both of these behaviors are declining as motor pools move towards electric vehicles that nobody uses or charges.

CHESTNUT HILL, MA—According to an alarming new report published Wednesday by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, third-graders in China are beginning to lag behind U.S. high school students in math and science.

The study, based on exam scores from thousands of students in 63 participating countries, confirmed that in mathematical and scientific literacy, American students from the ages of 14 to 18 have now actually pulled slightly ahead of their 8-year-old Chinese counterparts.

“This is certainly a wake-up call for China,” said Dr. Michael Fornasier, an IEA senior fellow and coauthor of the report. “The test results unfortunately indicate that education standards in China have slipped to the extent that pre-teens are struggling to rank among even the average American high school student.”

I've sort of tuned out the pope news, mainly because most of the yammering news heads are not Catholic. (and a fair number aren't even Christian) So good though. We have a pope, and I didn't have to listen to the blah-blah. I wonder a little bit if Chris Matthews or any of them called for Obama to be elected but if they did I'm glad I didn't hear it. I would have been against it, which no doubt would be labeled racist.

On Being Pro Life

In Maryland the Senate has passed SB 276, which would abolish the death penalty. It now just has to clear the House to become law.

I realize many conservatives disagree with me on this one. Disagreeing with me doesn't mean you're a bad person, it just means you're wrong. (That's pretty much a hard and fast rule, by the way)

So, if you do agree with me that life without parole is punishment enough, and you live in Maryland, go here and send a message to your delegate.

Make it Hurt

You've probably heard about this:

The Washington Times reported on another administration email that seemed to show at least one agency has been instructed to make sure the cuts are as painful as President Obama promised they would be.

In the internal email, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service official Charles Brown said he asked if he could try to spread out the sequester cuts in his region to minimize the impact, and he said he was told not to do anything that would lessen the dire impacts Congress had been warned of.

So I checked Fed Bid and found that APHIS is buying a 6X6 ATV and 16 4X4 ATVs (posted on Mar.6):

REQUIREMENTS: These requirements consist of 3 (Three) line items:

There's No Denying

The sequester cuts are going to be almost noticeable. The government can try to make them more noticeable but I'm hoping government employees will squawk when their agencies do stupid things.

"Look, we've spend too much per hospital patient. Let's cut off that oxygen and get rid of those IVs; that'll save us $15 right there."

Pig Beds of the Future

Now everyone on the farm can enjoy the benefits of sleeping in constant motion. Because everyone knows that moving cells around could probably be a good thing.
